Inductive Voltage Transformer: Overview and Applications An inductive voltage transformer (IVT) is a type of instrument transformer designed to step down high-voltage signals to a lower, standardized level suitable for measurement, protection, and control purposes in electrical power systems. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, similar to a conventional power transformer, but with a focus on accuracy and precision rather than power transfer. Working Principle The IVT consists of a primary winding connected to the high-voltage circuit and a secondary winding that delivers a reduced voltage proportional to the primary voltage. The turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings determines the voltage transformation. For example, a common ratio might be 10,000V:100V, meaning the secondary voltage is 1/100th of the primary voltage. The transformer core is typically made of high-permeability silicon steel to minimize losses and ensure accurate signal reproduction. The secondary winding is connected to measuring instruments (e.g., voltmeters, wattmeters) or protective relays, providing isolation between high-voltage systems and low-voltage control circuits for safety. Key Features 1. Accuracy Class – IVTs are classified based on their precision (e.g., Class 0.5, 1.0, or 3.0), indicating the maximum permissible error under specified conditions. 2. Burden Capacity – The maximum load (in VA) the secondary can supply without significant accuracy degradation. 3. Insulation and Safety – Designed to withstand high voltages and transient surges, ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments. 4. Frequency Response – Optimized for power system frequencies (50/60 Hz), though some models support wider ranges for specialized applications. Applications - Energy Metering – Provides precise voltage measurements for billing and monitoring. - Protection Relaying – Supplies voltage signals to relays for fault detection and system stability. - Synchronization – Ensures proper phase matching during generator or grid interconnection. - Control Systems – Feeds voltage data to SCADA and automation systems for grid management. Advantages and Limitations Advantages: - High accuracy and reliability. - Electrical isolation enhances safety. - Robust construction for long-term use. Limitations: - Limited frequency range compared to capacitive or electronic sensors. - Core saturation can distort measurements under fault conditions. Conclusion Inductive voltage transformers remain a fundamental component in power systems, offering a balance of accuracy, durability, and safety. While newer technologies like capacitive or optical sensors are emerging, IVTs continue to be widely used due to their proven performance in high-voltage applications.

IntroductionThe JDCF inductive voltage transformer is an instrument transformer with oil-paper insulation and a tank-type structure. Its shell is made of cast aluminum alloy, with a stainless steel expander on top to release internal pressure. Most of the connections between the shell, flange, and base use sub-arc welding instead of bolts and other mechanical connections, ensuring reliable sealing performance and solving the issue of oil leakage in oil-immersed products. The middle part consists of a porcelain bushing, the bottom is the oil tank, and the body is placed inside. The body includes...
